Cosmic Ray Facility

Overview

teststand2_smThe Cosmic Ray Facility can be used to investigate muon detectors with an active area of several square meters. The muon track above and below the detector under test is measured with a six layer monitored drifttube chamber, coarse position information in the wire direction is given by a scintillator hodoscope. Measuring the multiple scattering angle of muons in a 40cm iron absorber below the lower reference detector, allows for estimating the muon momentum.

88 monitored drifttube chambers for the ATLAS muon spectrometer were fully tested and calibrated in the Cosmic Ray Facility of LMU Munich. For each chamber we investigated the muon detection efficiency, noise behavior and drifttime spectra. The position of each drift wire with respect to an external alignment platform was determined.
