LHC and ATLAS final straight for 2023

Live collision events measured by ATLAS.

26.09.2023

The measurement campaign of LHC and ATLAS for 2023 entered the final straight. Now the protons in the beams are replaced by lead ions which collide at an incredible energy of more than 5 TeV per nucleon. This energy drives the temperature in these collisions way beyond 170 MeV. At this temperature ordinary protons and neutrons will melt into a plasma of quarks and gluons. This phase transition was also an essential step during the evolution of the universe shortly after the big bang. So take a few minutes to follow the live lead-lead collision events extracted from the ATLAS data stream. Maybe you are lucky and spot a central collision event. It will look amazingly because essentially everywhere in ATLAS particles from the collision will light-up the detector, almost like a little big bang.
